Ask The Bookie

These are the questions players ask a bookie, across a counter or at the end of a bad week. Each one gets a straight answer first and the reasons after it.

What lives here

A question belongs here when it has a short answer that people get wrong. I pick those first. What does a price mean, why did the line move, why did the book void my bet, what does a bookie actually do. If the subject needs a full chapter, it goes in the Gambling Guide and the answer here points to it.

Where I'd start

If you've never bet, read what -110 means. It's the price on most sides and totals, and once you understand it you understand the vig, which is how every book gets paid. The rest follows. If you've bet for years and still lose more than you think you should, read why odds move. And if a book has cancelled a bet of yours, start with why a sportsbook voids a wager.

None of the answers will make you a winner. I'd settle for them making you harder to beat, and I'd keep whatever you bet while you learn small enough that the lessons stay cheap.
