Sportsbook payouts

A sportsbook is only as good as its last payout. Everything else, the lines, the app, the bonus, matters only if the money comes back when you ask for it. The reviews below say what we found on each book's payouts; this page says how to read that.

Three clocks

A payout runs on three clocks, and players usually blame the wrong one. The first is the book's review, while the request sits pending and someone checks the account; the second is the book actually sending the money; and the third is the method, which is how long a bank, a card or a coin takes to arrive once it is on its way. The withdrawals guide takes you through each step.

Only the first two belong to the book. When a book advertises fast payouts, I'd want to know which clock it means, since a quick coin or a quick bank says nothing about how long the request waits in the book's own queue.

What slows a payout

Most delays come from a short list. An account that was never verified gets verified now. An open bonus with an unfinished rollover blocks the request. Money that came in one way often has to go back the same way, up to what you deposited by it. And the first payout at any book usually takes longest, because that is when the book looks hardest.

None of that is a scandal, and you can clear most of it before you need to. I'd verify the account the day I open it and decline any bonus I didn't plan to finish.

When slow becomes stalling

A slow book tells you its timetable and keeps to it. A stalling book keeps finding new reasons: one more document, a rule you can't find in the terms, a bonus offered if you cancel the request. One of those can be clumsiness. Several in a row is a pattern, the moment to stop betting there and start keeping records, and the withdrawals guide lists the signs in full.

Limits on what comes out

A book can cap how much you withdraw per request and how often, and the figure matters most next to the bet limits. Say a book takes a $1,100 bet to win $1,000 and lets you withdraw $500 a week. The winning ticket returns $2,100, and you need five weekly requests to get it all home. The page on how payout limits work covers the kinds of cap.

Before the big win

Ask for a small payout in your first weeks, before you have a balance worth worrying about, and time it from request to arrival. Keep what you need to bet in the account and take the rest out on a schedule. A player who only deposits never learns whether his book pays, and tends to find out with his biggest win.
