Bovada review: is it legit? What it states, what it doesn't, and how to test it
Bovada is an offshore sportsbook, casino, racebook and poker room that says it has taken bets since December 2011 and serves players in the US outside 19 states and DC. It publishes its withdrawal limits and its bonus math, which counts for a lot. It doesn't name the company behind it, and that is the first thing I'd want to know.
- Best for
- A US bettor outside the restricted states who is comfortable being paid in crypto and wants published payout limits.
- Not for
- A bettor in one of the 19 restricted states or DC, or anyone who wants to be paid back on a card or to a bank account.

Is Bovada legit?
People ask me that about every offshore book, and the honest answer is that nobody can tell you from the outside. What you can do is read what the book says about itself, notice what it leaves out, and test the one thing that matters with a small amount of money. Here's that for Bovada.
What it states. The footer says Bovada.lv "is licensed and regulated by the Union of the Comoros and the Central Reserve Authority of Western Sahara". The terms say they're governed by the laws of Anjouan, in the Comoros. The About page says Bovada has offered betting since December 2011 to "hundreds of thousands of players". The terms bar players in 19 states and DC (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Michigan, Colorado, Connecticut, West Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Arizona, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island), and say an account used from one of them can be closed and its balance voided.
What it doesn't state. On the pages I read there's no company name, no address and no license number. The terms say "we" and "the Company" throughout and never say who that is. The dispute page names a "Dispute Resolution Office" without saying who runs it. None of that proves anything bad. It does mean that if something goes wrong, you'd be chasing a website. I haven't checked the license claims with anyone, and an offshore license, where there is one, protects a player far less than a US state license. The offshore sportsbooks page explains the difference.
How it pays
This is the part Bovada does well, and it's the part I'd judge it on. The help center lists every limit.
Withdrawals go out by crypto or voucher, with check by courier and bank wire in the limits table too. Bitcoin runs $75 to $9,500 a request and $90,000 a week. Litecoin runs $10 to $9,500 and $180,000 a week. Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and USD Tether are capped at $2,500 a week. Checks cost $100 each, run $250 to $3,000 once every 7 days and take 10 to 15 business days. Requests are reviewed first come, first served in about 24 to 48 hours. After approval, Bitcoin arrives within 24 hours and the other coins within an hour. Bovada says it charges no fee on crypto withdrawals. A request over the limit is paid in installments.
So a big win comes out fine on Bitcoin. Say you lay $5,000 at -110 and it wins: the ticket returns $9,545, about one Bitcoin request. Lay $20,000 on the same price, if the book takes it, and $38,182 comes back in five requests inside one week's cap. The payout limits page explains why that weekly figure matters more than the bet limit.
Three rules to know before you deposit. The withdrawal methods listed don't include cards, so a card depositor is paid some other way, and may have to fill in a card verification form first. Every deposit must be wagered in full before you withdraw winnings. And the first card deposit is free, but later ones carry fees of 15.9 percent or more, which is a steep price to put money in. On a $200 card deposit that's at least $31.80 gone before your first bet.
The bonus, worked out
The sports welcome bonus is 50% of your first deposit up to $250, with a 5x rollover on deposit plus bonus. Bovada counts a winning bet at the lower of risk and win, and a losing bet at the risk. Deposit $500, take $250, and you owe $3,750 in action. If you bet sides at -110 and win half, that action costs about $179 on average, so the bonus leaves you roughly $71 ahead. That's one of the better sports offers I've worked out.
The crypto sports bonus is 75% up to $750, and here Bovada contradicts itself. The promotions table says 5x. The bonus's own page says 12x. On a $1,000 deposit that's $8,750 of action or $21,000, an expected cost of about $417 or $1,000 against a $750 bonus. One is worth taking and one isn't, so get the number confirmed before you use the code. The rollover page shows the method.
Before you put money in
Whether you may bet with Bovada depends on where you live, and its own terms shut out 19 states and DC. Check that first.
If you're clear, here's how I'd judge it. Deposit a small amount in Litecoin, which has a $10 withdrawal minimum, bet the deposit through once, and ask for a withdrawal. Note the time you asked and the time it landed. Do it again a month later. A book that pays a small request quickly twice has shown you more than any license logo.
And keep the bankroll rule. Decide what you can lose, keep each bet a small part of it, and use the monthly deposit limit the terms offer if you want the book to hold you to it.
