Gambling Guide

The Gambling Guide explains betting the way a bookmaker understands it. Each section takes one area, and each page in it takes one subject and works it through with real prices.

Three sections to start

Sports betting covers the bets themselves: spreads, moneylines, totals, parlays, teasers, props, futures and live betting, along with reading a price and handling a bankroll. Bookmaking is the view from my side of the counter: the vig, how a line is set and moved, exposure, hold, and the software a bookie rents. Banking and player protection is about your money between the deposit and the payout, from bonuses and crypto to ID checks, disputes and the limits you set yourself.

Casino and lottery sections follow, written the same way.

Where I'd begin

I'd start with how to read odds, because every other page leans on it. Then I'd read vigorish, which shows what the book takes out of each bet, and then bankroll, which shows how much of yours to put on any one of them. In that order, a new player learns in an afternoon what most learn over a few losing seasons.

The rest you can take as you need it. The guide doesn't change the odds, only how clearly you see them.
