Real money online casinos: what they are and how to judge one
A real-money casino takes your dollars and pays you back in dollars. That sounds obvious until you meet the casinos that don't, and the ones that do but won't say who they are. Here is how I'd tell them apart, and the nine we've reviewed.
Dollars in, dollars out
A real-money online casino is the plain version of the business. You deposit money, you bet it on a game, and when you win you ask for it back in the same money, by crypto, wire, check or whatever the cashier allows. The casino holds your balance the way a book holds a post-up account, and everything that matters comes down to whether it pays when you ask.
There are two other kinds of online casino, and people searching for "real money" often land on them by mistake. A social casino sells you play coins and never pays anything back; you're buying entertainment, nothing more. A sweepstakes casino sits in between: you buy one currency to play, it hands you a second one "free", and that second one can be redeemed for prizes. It's built to stay outside gambling law, and a number of states have decided it doesn't. I don't review either kind. Every casino on this site is a real-money casino.
Whether you may play at a real-money casino at all depends on where you live. Some states license online casinos of their own; most don't, and the casinos we review are offshore houses that take US players from outside the US system. That's a real difference. A state regulator can make a licensed casino pay; nobody can make an offshore one do anything, and I'd keep that in mind every time I left a balance on one.
How I'd judge one
Start with who's on the other side of the table. Most offshore casinos are a room inside a sportsbook, on the same account and the same cashier, so the company is the book's company. Ask the casino to name itself. Of our nine, YouWager Casino names The FF Group in its rules, and Bookie.ag Casino's site calls its sportsbook the flagship brand of RDG Corp. Most of the others name nobody. BetNow Casino makes its agreement with "Company, Inc.", which is a name in the way a blank form is a letter.
Then the licence. A claim isn't a licence. Bovada Casino says it's licensed by the Union of the Comoros and the Central Reserve Authority of Western Sahara, and gives no number. Xbet Casino calls itself "a fully licensed operator" without saying by whom. I'd want a regulator's name and a number I could look up, and none of our nine reviews found both.
Then the payout rules, which I'd read before anything else on the site. A casino can pay fast and still pay slowly, if it caps you per week. BetNow holds the first payout 30 days and pays $5,000 a week once casino wins pass $5,000 in a day. Xbet caps winnings at $10,000 a week. Everygame Casino publishes no withdrawal limits at all, and says payouts "may be paid in instalments". The withdrawals guide says what to ask, and the payout list puts the stated limits side by side.
Bonus terms come last, because the bonus is the part designed to be read first. The headline welcome bonus in each of our nine reviews works out to cost more to clear than it gives, at a 96% slot. The casino bonuses list and each review do that arithmetic. I'd play my own money and take a small withdrawal early to see how the cashier behaves.
The nine we've reviewed
All nine take real money, and all nine are casinos run beside a sportsbook in our directory.

The best online casinos list holds the ones that say they take US players, A to Z until our ratings are published. If you want to know what you'll be playing before where, the page on casino games for real money takes the games one at a time, with the price of each.
Before the first deposit
Set the number you can lose this week, and stop there. The house edge doesn't care how you feel about it, and a game at 2.70% is still a game you lose over time. If it stops being fun, the responsible gambling page says where to get help.
