What a code does

A casino runs several offers at once, and the code tells the cashier which one you're taking. Enter SLOTS500 and you've asked for the slots bonus, with the slots bonus's rollover. Leave the code out and, unless the casino says otherwise, your deposit should go in as plain cash. Ask, because that's the outcome I'd usually choose.

The code isn't the deal. The terms behind it are, and they don't change because the code looks clever. Some casinos want the code typed at the cashier; some, like JustBet, want you to claim it on live chat the same day you deposit. Either way, take a screenshot of the offer and the terms the moment you take it. Codes change. So do the terms behind them, without notice, and our own reviews found casinos whose pages disagree with each other about the same code.

Three of these come with a warning in the review. BookMaker's table code is CASINO250 on its casino page and GAME250 on its promotions page. MyBookie's banner says 150% where the offer says 200%. And Xbet's own pages give its requirement as 40 times in one place and 50 in another. Bovada, Bookie.ag and YouWager offer welcome bonuses too, but their reviews quote no code for them.

What a code is worth

The headline percentage tells you almost nothing, because a 300% bonus sounds three times better than a 100% one and usually costs more to clear, for the simple reason that the rollover is charged on a bigger number. The sum I'd do takes a minute. Three steps.

First, the play you owe: the rollover times whatever it's counted on. BetNow's own example on its site is a $100 deposit with CASINO200, which brings $200 of bonus, and 25 times $300 is $7,500 of play before you can withdraw. Second, the cost of that play: the amount times the house edge of the game you'll use. On a slot that returns 96%, the edge is 4%, and 4% of $7,500 is $300. Third, compare it with the bonus. You're paying $300 on average for $200. That's a $100 loss for taking the code. On average, yes. But averages are what a casino lives on.

Do it for any code on this page and the shape is the same. The Xbet review puts XB300 on a $200 deposit at $24,200 of play and about $968 of expected cost for a $600 bonus. Table players have it worse. Bovada, MyBookie and Xbet count blackjack at 10% toward the rollover (YouWager at 25%), so the same requirement takes ten times the hands. Then look for the lines that cap the upside: a maximum cashout, a maximum bet while the bonus is live, an expiry. A code at 50x with 72 hours to clear it, like BookMaker's slots bonus, is a race you'll mostly lose.

When I'd type one in

Rarely. A code earns its place when the rollover is low and you'd play that much anyway, or when the free part comes with a 1x rollover, as Xbet's free spins do. Otherwise I'd deposit without a code, play my own money, and keep the right to withdraw it when I like. Set your limit before you open the lobby, and see responsible gambling for the tools.
