Football betting sites

The NFL is the most bet sport in the country and the market every book fights hardest for. On the big game of the week the line will be almost the same everywhere. What differs between football betting sites is the price beside the line, the handling of the key numbers and what the book pushes at you on Sunday.

The bets themselves, and what winning at -110 takes, are on how to bet on football.

The same season at two prices

Most of an NFL bettor's money goes on sides and totals, so the price on those is the first thing I'd compare. Here is one season of 100 bets to win $100 each, with 53 winners, at a book dealing -110 and at one dealing -105.

Price53 winners pay47 losers costThe season
-110$5,300$5,170Up $130
-105$5,300$4,935Up $365

Same games, same picks, nearly three times the profit. A cheaper price doesn't make a loser into a winner, but over a season it is worth more than most tips you will read.

How a book deals 3 and 7

Pro football games land on a margin of 3 more than on any other number, with 7 next, and the book knows it as well as you do. Watch what a book does when the market sits on 3. Some move the price, -3 at -120 one way and +3 at even money the other, rather than move off the number. Others go to 2.5 or 3.5 quickly. A book that lets you buy the half point onto or off 3 at a fair price is worth having for that alone, and one that charges heavily for it is telling you where it makes its money.

I'd keep at least two football books for that reason, and check both before every bet near 3 or 7.

Limits and timing

Sides and totals on the NFL carry the highest limits of any market at most books, because the number is the most worked over in the business. Props, the lower-volume games and the opening numbers early in the week take much less. If you bet early, look for a book that opens early and takes a real bet on the opener. If you bet the weekend with everyone else, the price and the hook matter more than the limit.

How the number moves through the week, and why, is on the odds movement page.

The Sunday menu

The book's profit is not on the side you bet at -110. It is on the touchdown scorer props, the same game parlays, the boosted parlay of the week and the live line during the late game, because each of those carries a much bigger cut and is bet by people who don't add it up. A good football site makes every one of them a tap away, and the better the app, the more it costs a careless player.

The public usually bets favorites and overs, in prime time and in parlays, and a book that has a lot of that money on one side on a Sunday night will happily sit on the position. I don't think that makes the other side a bet on its own, but it does explain why the popular side is rarely the cheap one by kickoff.

Your limit, not the book's

A full Sunday card asks for a bet on every game. I'd bet the few where I had a reason and stake 1 or 2 percent of the bankroll on each, with a figure for the whole weekend fixed before the early games. The book needs every game on its board. You need only the ones it got wrong.
