NFL Preseason Week 3 Essentials
By Tony Mejia

Sunday, Aug. 30

Houston at New Orleans: Losing tight end Jimmy Graham to Seattle is a major blow, but there was justifiable criticism that Drew Brees was targeting him too much at the expense of some of the other targets on the roster. With an abundance of talented receivers to spread the ball to, Brees has looked like his old self. It should be a blast to see how quickly he can get rid of it against the Texans stout front seven. J.J. Watt should be rested and ready to go after sitting out Saturday’s game against the Broncos. The QB battle between Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer has seen Hoyer named the starter for Week 1, so we’ll see how snaps are handed down here.

Arizona at Oakland: Despite the presence of elite rookie WR Amari Cooper to ease his burden, Derek Carr has only produced field goals and has largely misfired. The Cardinals secondary presents a great test for him. Carson Palmer has participated in both preseason games thus far, flashing a great deep ball and confidence in the pocket. If Arizona can keep him upright, it should stay in contention.

10:07 am Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays

Buehrle Has Hit a Bump

The general notion is that the Blue Jays are an offensive machine that can’t be stopped. It’s hard to argue that after they pounded Detroit 15-1 on Saturday. But if the stars align just right – who knows. Take for example Tiger starter Alfredo Simon. Despite his 11-8 record and a 4.89 era, on August 20 he threw a 9 inning 1 hitter against the Texas Rangers. Pretty impressive. But in his next start, Simon lasted just 4 1/3 innings and gave up 8 runs on 9 hits to the Angels. Blue Jay starter Mark Buehrle has been strong this year with a 13-6 record together with a 3.60 era. But if the starts align just right – who knows. Buehrle has been battered about a bit in his last 2 starts. On August 19 the Phillies got him for 4 runs and 7 hits in only 4 frames. In his next start, Buehrle went 6 against the Rangers who popped him for 5 runs and 7 hits. Toronto and Buehrle opened up a -270 for Sunday’s tilt.

10:10 am Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians

Weaver Tries to Make Angels Relevant Again

When a fly ball that should have been caught fell between Mike Trout and Kole Calhoun last week in Detroit, Weaver exploded in the dugout. That’s not something the Halos have been used to but it did spark the Angels to a win. But Weaver’s outburst hasn ‘t had a lasting effect on the Angels who continue to have problems on the mound, in the field and at the plate. Maybe Weaver will need to explode a second time to get the Angels rolling again before it is too late. Weaver took a 2.08 era into his last start since since coming off the DL. Losers of 13 of their lasts 20, the Angels have scored less than 5 runs in 10 of their last 13. They have only averaged 3.00 runs per game in their last 7. The Halos will be facing Josh Tomlin who will be making his 4th start after missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. Tomlin’s gone 2-1 with a 3.26 era. Tomlin has had some trouble keeping the ball in the park in his last 3 starts giving up a total of 6 round trippers. But Trout and Pujols have done a great job of keeping the ball in the park as of late. Cleveland opened at -125.

10:35 am San Diego Padres at Philadelphia Phillies

Asher Makes First Start for Phils Against Shields

Who is Alec Asher? Asher is the second player the Phils acquired in the trad for Cole Hamels. He makes his big league debut today against the Padres and James Shields. Asher is 23 years old and was drafted in the 2010 Amateur Draft from Lakeland High School then again by Texas in the 4th round of the 2012 draft. In 4 seasons in the Minor Leagues, Asher has gone 28-31 with a 3.53 era. He has been with 3 teams in 2015 in Double-A and Triple-A going 5-6 with a 3.97 era. In Triple-A this season he has averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game and 2.7 walks. One troubling stat is the fact that he gave up 1.5 home runs per 9 innings. Asher will face James Shields who sandwiched one good game between two bad ones in his last 3 starts. In the bad ones he allowed 14 hits and 10 runs in just 12 innings against the Reds and Nats. In- between he went 6 innings and shut out the Braves on 5 hits. Shields threw a season high 121 pitches in his last start. The padres opened as -155 favorites.

11:10 am Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins

Facing Santana May Awaken Dormant Astro Bats

The mighty Astro bats and their 3 run homer barrage has subsided in recent weeks. Other than a 15 run explosion against the NYY, the Astros have not scored more than 6 runs in their last 13 games. Nevertheless they have won 8 of their last 13. Perhaps the bats will awaken Sunday when the Twins send Ervin Santana to the bump. Santana is 2-4 with a 6.05 era. August has been decidedly worse. In 5 starts, Santana’s era has been a lofty 9.12. He only lasted 2 2/3 innings in his last start allowing 5 runs to weak hitting Tampa Bay. In his prior 2 starts he went 13 2/3 innings giving up 15 hits and 9 earned runs. Santana is 1-4 with a 7.28 era in his last 7 games. Left handers are hitting .303 off Santana. Houston opened at -130 on the road.

1:05 pm St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants

Garcia Continues to Sparkle

Jaime Garcia has yet to allow more than 3 earned runs in a start this season. That’s a pretty good formula for victory. Yet Garcia is only 6-4 despite a 1.77 era, second only to Zack Greinke. Garcia has gone at least 6 innings in 12 of his 13 starts. Remarkably consistent, Garcia is 4-1 with a 1.77 era in his last 7 starts and 6-4 with a 1.77 era in his last 15 starts. He faced the Giants on August 19 and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits. He is even better on the road where he is 3-2 with a 1.35 era. Daytime is also kind to Garcia where his era is only 1.50 but his record is 0-1. Garcia has gone 3-0 in August with a 1.38 era. Lefties are hitting just .229 off him while the right siders are struggling at .191. Oddly, though at bats are limited, 8 Giants are hitting .313 or better against Garcia. Garcia opened as the -110 chalk against Chris Heston who was just recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Matt Cain in the Giant rotation.

Game of the Day: Roughriders at RedBlacks

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Ottawa RedBlacks (-3, 51.5)

The Ottawa Redblacks look to get back on track when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The Redblacks have lost back-to-back games following a 30-24 setback to the Toronto Argonauts to fall four points behind Toronto and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the race for top spot in the East Division.

Ottawa dropped both meetings with the Roughriders last season, including a 35-32 double-overtime loss, and hopes to avoid falling further off the pace by earning its fourth home victory of the year. Saskatchewan remains the only winless team in the CFL after dropping a 34-31 decision to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 9. The Roughriders are mired in their longest losing streak since finishing the 1999 season with eight straight defeats, and six of their eight losses this year have come by four points or fewer. Saskatchewan is mathematically alive for the final playoff spot in the West Division as they sit six points behind Winnipeg and BC, but no team has ever started the year with eight straight losses and qualified for the postseason.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN2

LINE HISTORY: Books opened Ottawa -3. The total opened 52.5 but is down a full point to 51.5.

INJURY REPORT: Roughriders – SB Chris Getzlaf (Out, leg).

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-8 SU, 2-5-1 ATS, 5-3 O/U): Offensive lineman Randy Richards was slapped with the maximum fine by the CFL after he was ejected for his clothesline tackle on Calgary return man Tim Brown during the loss to Stampeders. The injury bug continues to bite the Riders as slotback Chris Getzlaf, who has caught four touchdown passes, was carted off the practice field after injuring his left leg while running a routine route Wednesday. Paul McCallum saw his extra point streak come to an end as he missed his first conversion since Sept. 25, 1993 after making 802 straight attempts.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS, 5-3 O/U): Henry Burris completed his first 18 passes before finishing 32-of-36 for 426 yards to set a CFL record for completion percentage in a game with at least 35 attempts. Ottawa released its leading tackler Brandon McDonald on Wednesday after the defensive back committed his 10th infraction of the season – a momentum-changing objectionable conduct penalty – in the loss to the Argonauts. “It’s been an issue and we just felt that enough was enough,” Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins told reporters. “We couldn’t have the lack of discipline continue when we’ve tried to correct it a number of times.”

* Over is 4-0 in RedBlacks last four games overall.
* Roughriders are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eighth road games.
* RedBlacks are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Under is 38-17 in Roughriders last 55 games in August.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-six percent are backing the RedBlacks.

The New York Crew has its 150 Dime play on San Francisco and Chris Heston at home against the Cardinals and Jaime Garcia. Specify starters. The Giants are +100 to +105 at the majority of the books I’ve checked as of 7:25 AM Eastern as I put my site live for Sunday.

HOUSTON TEXANS +3.5 on the road versus the N.O. Saints!

1-Unit Play. Take the Arizona/Oakland GAME TOTAL – UNDER 40
Play the Cardinals/Raiders GAME TOTAL UNDER 40 as my 1-Unit NFLX Smash for Sunday. This pick falls into 3 of my NFL systems and both teams have struggled offensively this preseason. Oakland has averaged just 15 ppg while Arizona has averaged just 19 ppg. Arizona is being overly cautious this preseason with their Quarterbacks and some key players to avoid injuries and yet they just dominated time of possession. Oakland has been almost split 50/50 on pass and run plays this preseason unlike most preseason teams who will generally pass 65% of the time. This is also a much improved Raiders defense that gave up over 28 ppg last season. Put all this together with my NFL systems and we have what should be a low scoring game here Sunday night as I look to remain perfect this NFL preseason. This will also be my last NFLX play of the preseason. Remember what ever you saw from teams in the preseason, throw it out of your mind because it all changes when the real show begins and I can’t wait.

2 Unit Play. New Orleans -3.5 over Houston
Saints defense starters took last week off and lost at home to New England but Sunday I see a big game from both side of the Saints ball. Who Dat nation will be loud and I see them winning this game by a touchdown or more.

Arizona Cardinals +1

8:00 PM
Rotation #281-282
Cardinals PK over Raiders (First Half)
Arizona’s first team has looked good in the preseason. This is a team that could have went deep in the playoffs, but were hit hard with the injury bug. Simply put, the Cardinals starters are better than Oakland’s. I do like the direction this Raiders team is heading, but they still are young and the talent is not there yet as far as making a run. Arizona has great receivers who have been in the system so I expect them to have a decent first half. In the second half the Cardinals will play two QB’s that probably won’t be on the roster or they will be on the practice squad so Oakland might make some noise in the second half. I am concerned with evaluating first and second team talent and couldn’t care less about the guys that are not going to be on the team come next week. Take the Cardinals for the first half.

4:05 PM
Rotation #909-910
Cardinals -120 over Giants
The Giants are dealing with a banged up lineup right now and I just think Kelly is fresher and a better starting pitcher in this game. This Cardinals Bullpen is rock solid and right now they are gearing up for a World Series run. This should have a playoff atmosphere to it. Take St. Louis.

Sunday’s NFL Preseason Week 3 Betting Primer

The third week of the NFL preseason concludes with two on the board Sunday. With this being the last time before the regular season most starters will see action and camp injuries claiming plenty of players already, it can be hard to stay on top of the action.

Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints (-3.5, 43.5)

* The Texans named Brian Hoyer their starting quarterback this week so expect him to roll with the ones into the 3rd quarter. Last season’s No. 1 overall pick, defensive end JaDaveon Clowney returned to practice this week, but won’t be playing in the preseason as the Texans hope to have him ready for Week 1.

* Everyone’s biggest concern with the Saints is that Drew Brees lost the majority of his pass catchers this offseason. So look to see if Brees can create some chemistry with rookie wide receiver Brandon Coleman, who has reportedly been dominating practice, but has yet to make an impact in games.

Arizona Cardinals at Oakland Raiders (PK, 40)

* Former Titans and Jets running back Chris Johnson was recently signed by the Cardinals and despite just returning to practice this week CJ2K could see some action against Oakland. It will be interesting to see if he has any juice left in those legs and how the carries get split between him and the other backs.

* The third week of the preseason is usually the game teams us as their final tune up heading into the regular season, but with all the injuries teams have suffered Raiders coach Jack Del Rio might take a more conservative approach with his starters in this game.

4 Unit Play. Take #290 Ottawa Redblacks -2.5 over Saskatchewan Roughriders (4:05 PM, Sunday, August 30)

7-Unit Play. Take Inter Milan (-133) over Carpi (2:45 p.m., Sunday, August 30)

3-Unit Play. Take Valencia (-187) over Deportivo La Coruna (2:30 p.m., Sunday, August 30)

MLB Screen Shot – Sunday

Marlins @ Nationals — Brad Hand will face his nemesis in Washington on Sunday. Hand is 0-5 with an 8.19 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in seven career starts against the Nationals. In three home outings against Washington last year, Hand gave up 14 runs and 21 hits in 15 innings of work. Stephen Strasburg is looking for his first win of the year against Miami. He lasted just nine total innings in two earlier starts against the Marlins. I like Over 7 (+100) in this game.

Padres @ Phillies — Alec Asher gets the call for the Phillies on Sunday afternoon. Asher went 6-10 with a 3.97 ERA in 24 starts for three different minor league teams this season. The righty had 109 strikeouts to just 40 walks over 133.2 innings of work. San Diego’s James Shields isn’t in the best of form right now; he gave up 5 runs in two of his last three starts against the Nationals and Reds. The Phillies have scored 4 runs or more in five of their last six games, so Shields figures to struggle once again. The value is certainly on the Phillies (+140) in this game.

Reds @ Brewers — A report out of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday said that Wily Peralta may be dealing with a dead arm right now. Peralta has allowed 13 runs and 26 hits in his last four starts. However, Jay Bruce (4-20), Zack Cozart (3-23), Todd Frazier (2-14), and Brandon Phillips (3-16) have all struggled mightily against Peralta. But that was against a healthy Peralta. Cincinnati’s John Lamb is 0-2 with a 6.06 ERA and 1.65 WHIP on the season. Over 8.5 (-120) looks like the right way to play this game.

Mariners @ White Sox — Edgar Olmos will make his first Major League start for the Mariners on Sunday. He made four appearances previously out of the bullpen for Seattle, allowing just five hits and two walks in 7.2 innings of work. Of note, one of those appearances came at home back on August 22nd against the White Sox. He held Chicago hitless and scoreless in that appearance. Carlos Quintana is not in the best of form for the White Sox right now; he has allowed 8 earned runs on 22 hits in his last 18 innings of work. Early money has come in on Seattle, dropping the line 10 cents from the opener.

MLB Game: Colorado Rockies (903) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (904)
Time: Sunday 08/30 1:35 PM Eastern
Pick: Pittsburgh -1.5 (+110) at Americasbookie
The Pittsburgh Pirates are red hot, winning of 14 of their last 17 games, and own the second-best record in baseball. This is a bad situational spot for a Colorado squad that has packed in the season, on a 4-15 run. Those losses have been by 2, 2, 4, 5, 5, 3, 9, 2, 4, 11, 3, 4, 1, and 2 runs! Colorado is on an 8-21 run and stuck with 34-year-old Jorge De La Rosa (4.61 ERA). The team is 0-3 his last three starts, getting hit hard by the Braves his last outing, a 5-3 loss allowing 5 runs, 9 hits, and 4 walks in 7 innings. De La Rosa has issued 10 walks in 13 innings over his last two starts and has one win in his last nine. The Pirates are on a 39-13 run at home, 13th in baseball in runs scored and eighth in on base percentage. Charlie Morton (8-5) is throwing well for the Pirates with the team 5-1 his last six starts. He is also 5-1 at home with a 2.82 ERA this season and 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA in six career starts against Colorado. Pittsburgh improved to 21-4 against the West after yesterday’s 4-3 victory, putting Colorado 0-7 here in Pittsburgh, and will have no trouble rolling in this one. Play Pittsburgh on the runline.
