The Florida Panthers and the Winnipeg Jets play their second of two games in Finland as part of the National Hockey League Global Series. The Jets won the first, a 4-2 win yesterday after Patrik Laine completed the hat trick in his homeland with 2 third period goals.
The Jets are currently tied for second place in the NHL this season with 17 points, with the Panthers dead last with 7 points. Although it is still early, the Jets have the goods to make a long run in the playoffs again this season, with a great mix of young players like the aforementioned Laine, Mark Scheifele and goalie Connor Hellebuyck, to go along with veterans like Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler.
The Panthers have some good players, but when matched up against the Jets, it’s no contest in my opinion. The biggest problem I have when handicapping this one is the public is all over the Jets, and sometimes that scares me.
Having said that, I feel comfortable taking the Jets on the moneyline at -140. I am also considering the Jets at -1.5+190, because I truly feel that they are the far superior team. The Jets have the edge in all facets, with three solid forward lines and three solid defensive pairings. Add in Hellebuyck vs. expected Panther starter James Reimer, and even at -140 I feel comfortable putting this one out there.
Don’t forget that this is a very early start in Finland, with the puck drop at 2PM ET. I am waiting until the start time gets closer before I submit this pick and figure out if I’m going puck line or moneyline, but for now, Jets moneyline is my free Friday pick.
