NHL Free Pick | Columbus at Colorado
Both teams come in tonight looking for big answers, for big hockey problems. Both were contenders at one point and Columbus still is, but wow, the bumpiness of the path has become much more difficult. The Avs are showing themselves the door very quickly and without a miracle turnaround, they will not see the playoffs. The Blue Jackets are in a huge slump after losing five in a row and are now facing the second wild card spot.
This team can get in, this is a highly talented group, however, they must focus on the fundamentals of hockey and not the playoffs. If they play like they know they can, then they will be in.
We have another Free Pick for tonight’s Vegas at Tampa Bay game in Schwab’s weekly article.
Game: Columbus Blue Jackets (28-20-3, 28-23 ATS) at Colorado Avalanche (22-21-8, 22-29 ATS)
When: 9:00 PM ET, Tuesday, February 5th, 2019
Where: Pepsi Center, Denver, Colorado
Current Line: Colorado -120 Total: 6.5
TV Coverage: FS Ohio, Altitude
The Blue Jackets are scoring 3.20 goals per game while allowing 3.10. Colorado is scoring 3.33 goals per game and allowing 3.25. The Avs have won just five of their last 22 games and the struggles seem to come in big waves. This team started the season out as a big underdog to go anywhere and the fact of the matter is this; they came out of the gate strong and made a surprisingly big impression. Now, we are seeing the real Colorado Avalanche.
The Blue Jackets have maintained a high position in most of the national top 10 power rankings but have obviously dropped several spots due to five consecutive losses. This game tonight will determine the metal of the Blue Jackets and it will most likely be a precursor as to this team missing or making the playoffs. Do they lay down and die to a struggling Colorado team, or do they pick themselves up by the bootstraps and get a necessary win?

The Avs are facing the realities that their season is most likely over. This doesn’t mean they have lost their heart but it does mean that teams on the cusp, are going to give them a very hard time.
In what could be a make or break game for Columbus, we have to go with the team that needs it worse.
