Our Free Pick of the Day comes from the NHL tonight as the Colorado Avalanche host the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals. The Caps appear to be still feeling the effect of all those Cup keg stands, barely over .500.
The Avs started the season with six wins in their first 9 games, but stumbled of late, losing 5 in a row between the end of October and November 9th, but seemed to be back on track with wins in their last 2.

Colorado’s top line of Mikko Rantanen, Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog have been on fire, with the Rantanen and MacKinnon currently numbers 1 and 2 in league scoring. They have helped the Avalanche to the top of the goals per game list with 3.61, with the Capitals at #8 with 3.28.
Both teams are also lighting the lamp with the man advantage, in the top 4 with Colorado #3, scoring 18 and the Caps #4 with 17. On the defensive side of the ice, the Caps are also in the top 10, giving up the 5th most goals per game at 3.33 with the Avs at #20 giving up 2.89.
Both backups are projected to be between the pipes in this one, as Braden Holtby is listed as day to day while he is nursing am upper body injury, and Philipp Grubauer is expected to give Semyon Varlamov a breather after he started the team’s last 4 games.
These two have played to the OVER in 5 of their last six meetings, and all signs point to goals, goals and more goals tonight.
