South Alabama hasn’t had a winning season since 2011 when they played as an FCS Independent. Since entering the Sun Belt Conference in 2012, the Jaguars just haven’t been able to put it together.
Last year, South Alabama went 2-10 and won just one game in the Sun Belt. The Jaguars ranked near the bottom of the country in offensive production. They averaged just 18.4 points per game.
Once again in 2020, South Alabama will find it difficult to put together wins. Head coach Steve Campbell is 5-19 in his third season. He has won everywhere he has been including Division II and FCS.

He is building something and it starts with QB Desmond Trotter. The sophomore took over late last season and had a 151.8 passer rating as the Jags averaged 26 points per game over their last four outings.

Trotter will have a tough go against Jay Hopson’s Golden Eagles. He’ll also return his QB Jack Abraham who threw for nearly 3,500 yards last season. Southern Miss will have to improve its running game though. These are all major factors when handicapping today’s South Alabama Southern Miss pick.
The offensive line returns eight players who have a combined 94 starts, including all-conference candidate G Arvin Fletcher. That should help the Southern Miss running attack.
Where Hopson’s team really shines though is on defense. Southern Miss returns five players who each logged at least 6.5 havoc plays (tackles for loss, passes defensed, or forced fumbles. Those five will form the core of one of Conference USA’s best defensive units.
What’s it all mean tonight?
Well, Southern Miss is 7-1 SU in their last eight games at home. In their last five openers, the Golden Eagles are 5-0 ATS.
Make it six. The Golden Eagles will be too much for South Alabama to handle on opening night.
