MLB Free Pick | Nationals at Mets

This 2019 MLB season has started out in a very weird way! It’s early, very early, and the indicators to this point, they simply don’t matter. Having said that, if you are any kind of baseball fan that keeps up with baseball on any level, then you know exactly how odd the start to this season has been.

Game: Washington Nationals (2-3, 1-4 ATS) at New York Mets (5-1, 5-1 ATS)

When: 1:10 PM ET, Thursday, April 4th, 2019

Where: Citi Field, Queens, New York

Current Line: Mets -125 Total: 6.5

Probable Pitchers: S. Strasburg vs. N. Syndergaard

The Yankees were backdoor swept by the Orioles, the Padres look amazing, the Mariners are on fire, the Red Sox and Yankees have been awful and none of this first week makes any sense whatsoever.

The Mariners are the best team in baseball at 7-1 and who would have seen this coming with the off-season fire sale? Baseball is a funny game, it’s a strange game that has a way of working itself out over time, as the season grows old, the best teams show up. It will happen this year, bank on it.

Stephen Strasberg is not getting the benefit of the doubt early on, and certainly not in this game. The question is this, why should Syndergaard? What makes him special at this point? Really, nothing!

There is simply not a home field advantage in regular-season baseball. Sure, in a home-team-leading the game- in late situations, there is a slight advantage simply for the fact that only 8 ½ inning must be played. That’s the only advantage. There is no crowd advantage, no stadium advantage, the fans are not a factor. This is baseball and there are 81 home games and 81 road games.

Both Strasburg and Syndergaard come in with a 6.00 ERA and both have given up 7 hits in their one outing on the season. They have both pitched 6.0 innings on the season and the only advantage in the stats line would be that Strasburg has given up two walks, Syndergaard, no walks.

The Mets have come out of the gate hitting the ball very well with 61 hits on the season, 37 runs, and a .343 OBP. The Nationals have put up 44 hits, with 25 runs and an OBP of .323. Neither Syndergaard or Strasburg have a clear-cut advantage, however, if there is a slight edge, it must be given to the Mets with a 4-1 record in day games, against a 2-3 record in day games for the Nationals.
