Reigning NL MVP Christian Yelich had to pull out of the event, but there are still a number of long ball bashers remaining in the field. The favorite is Pittsburgh’s man-child Josh Bell (+250). Bell is 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds and, to his advantage, is a switch hitter. Bell has hit 27 homers so far this season.
Bell will face Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna (+850) in the first round of the competition. Acuna is the longest of long shots to win tonight’s event. Acuna does have 21 homers this year, but unfortunately for him he’s only 6-0, 180 pounds and he hits from the right side of the plate.
Progessive Field, home to tonight’s event and all of the All-Star Game festivities, is particularly unkind to right-handed batters. The 19-foot fence in left field has quashed many a right-handed homer. Guys like Acuna, Alex Bregman (+700), and Vladimir Guerrero Jr (+400) will have some trouble launching homers to left field.
The safe bet is, of course, Bell who would become the first Pirates player to ever win a Home Run Derby. That’s just a little too easy. Plus, you can pad your earnings by taking a look at Los Angeles Dodgers LF Joc Pederson.
Pederson is one of two contestants that have any Home Run Derby experience. He was the runner-up in 2015. Pederson also bats from the left side of the plate. He is a big-time pull hitter who will face Bregman (the other contestant with derby experience) is Round 1. Pederson has hit 20 homers so far this season and his experience and simply being left-handed will propel him to victory and earn him a nice $1 million bonus tonight.
MLB Free Pick: Joc Pederson +450
