Defensive Strategy

Last night, the Mavericks used a defensive strategy that included double-teaming Hawks point guard Trae Young. The move paid off as Young didn’t score his first field goal until there were five minutes left in the first half.

Young would finish with 21 points, most of them coming from free throws. It was Atlanta’s second straight loss dropping them to 10-11 overall.

Utah, on the other hand, is smoking hot. The Jazz have won 12 of their last 13 games and are fresh off of a 117-105 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

In addition to the 12 wins in 13 games, Utah has also been good to those betting NBA covering the spread in four of their last five games and 11 of the last 13.

Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, who averages 23.3 points per game, hadn’t hit the 20-point mark in four straight games before going off for 32 on Tuesday in the win over Detroit. Mitchell has averaged 23.7 points in six games against the Hawks in his career.

The Jazz and Hawks met back on Jan. 15 in Salt Lake City. Like Dallas last night, the Jazz did a number on Young. Utah held the Hawks point guard to a season-low four points and went on to blow out Atlanta 116-92.

Don’t forget, Utah is one of the better defensive teams in the NBA. They should be a contributing factor in tonight’s Jazz Hawks free pick. The Jazz are third in the league in points allowed per game (106.2). If they can limit Young again, good things will happen.

What doesn’t happen for the Hawks is playing well in games when they have no rest. Atlanta has played four back-to-backs already this season. They have split three times and lost both games once.

In their last 15 games in which they had no rest and played consecutive nights, the Hawks are just 4-11 ATS.

With Utah on a roll, look for the Jazz to have another big night against an Atlanta team that is struggling.
