Cardinals Padres Free Pick | Winner Takes All Wild Card Showdown

I’m a baseball purist, but I’ve loved this year’s MLB Playoff format. I can’t wait for this one tonight, and just had to bring y’all a Cardinals Padres free pick. The winner will move on to the NLDS against the mighty Dodgers.

Padres Starter Still TBD

Any elimination game is fun, but even a little wager will bring that much more excitement. Cardinals ace Jack Flaherty will toe the rubber, however, at the time of publishing, the Padres have yet to announce their starter.

The Cardinals must be gassed. To finish the season, from September 5th through September 27th, they played 29 games! That’s 29 games in 23 days.

A 11-9 game last night was not what Cards manager Mike Shildt wanted. Although the Cardinals finished 10th in bullpen ERA for the season, their ERA was still 4.00, despite having the 4th lowest innings pitched. For comparison, the Padres finished #14 in ERA at 4.38 with 234.1 IP (18th).

A look at the regular season standings shows the Padres were the better team. They finished 14 games over .500 (37-23) with a +84 run differential. The Cardinals were 4 games over .500 (30-28) with a +11 run differential.

Can the Cardinals overcome giving up Game 2 leads of 4-0 and 6-2? The later being in the 6th inning? This is the turning point of my Cardinals Padres free pick.

Where the difference lies in this one is superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. He came up in a huge spot in the bottom of the 6th, 2 on, 1 out … and took righty reliever Giovanny Gallegos’ pitch out of the park. Manny Machado followed that up for back-to-back jacks, sending the Gallegos offering 414 feet from home plate out to left.

Cardinals Padres Best Bet

While I don’t think this young team will make it to the World Series this year, they will get a little more playoff experience after they win this one and continue through the MLB Playoff bracket.

This is a tough one due to no starter named and no odds on the board at your top online sportsbook, but I am going to take the Padres to win this one.
