Did you know betting golf is the latest trend to hit sports betting. It’s hard to watch TV, surf the Internet, or even drive past billboards without seeing advertising for sports betting. Bettors are inundated with offers to play this sportsbook or that sportsbook.

Over the course of the last few years, many sports bettors have been diving into the latest sports betting trend – golf. Yes, betting golf is the newest betting trend.

USING ADVANCED PGA STATS TO PICK WINNERS

Why Betting Golf?

It’s no secret that betting on NFL football and NBA basketball are more popular than wagering on other sports. Savvy bettors, however, understand the advantages of betting on golf.

There are numerous golf tournaments throughout the season. Most sports fans will recognize the golf PGA majors – the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and The Open – but many don’t realize there is a tournament just about every weekend from the season’s start in September until it ends the following September.

Not only are there several tournaments from which to choose, there is also a wide variety of golf betting markets. There are futures markets, head-to-head betting, and all sorts of props bets. With all that action, it’s easy to see why golf betting is becoming more and more popular.

Odds in Your Favor

The most popular golf bets from week to week are on outright tournament winners. Before play begins, bettors can wager on who they believe will win the tournament. There is a TON of money to be made betting the winner of PGA Tournaments. Did you know, the largest wager BetOnline had on Phil Mickelson was $80? At 300-1 odds, that bettor won $24,000.

Now, even the overall favorite in a given tournament will come in listed at around +500. That’s still a nice payout even though you are betting on the favorite.

What really attracts bettors to golf is the number of potential longshot bets. Take the most recent PGA Championship as an example. The favorite to win the event was Rory McIlroy, who has two PGA titles under his belt. Even though he was favored, he was listed at +1200. Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth were next at +1500.

When it was all said and done, Phil Mickelson became the oldest player to win a major tournament when he captured this year’s PGA Championship after shooting a six-under 282.

Prior to the first round of play, Mickelson was a huge longshot at +28000. A bettor that laid down $100 on Mickelson would have pocketed $28,000.

The moral of the story is that there is plenty of value to be found when betting on a golf tournament. You just have to find it.

Other Golf Bets

While betting on a tournament winner is the most popular bet, there are a number of others where bettors can find even more value. Take the Finishing or Place bets.

You can wager on a particular golfer to finish in a certain position. These bets offer a range. For example, you can bet on a golfer to finish in the Top 5, Top 10, or even Top 20. The odds, of course, will not be as advantageous as the odds to win but bettors can still pad their bankrolls.

Head-to-head bets offer another market. Typically, you will see players with similar odds to win a tournament pitted against each other. Take Rahm and Spieth from this year’s PGA. They were both listed at +1500. Bettors may find a head-to-head bet on those two golfers. Most often in head-to-head golf bets, the odds are around -110 on each golfer.

Betting Golf Props

Golf bettors will also find plenty of outstanding prop bets on each tournament. The most extensive props bets will be found at the four major tournaments.

Bettors will find wagers on a potential hole-in-one, a player to make the cut, even hole-to-hole results. The list of props can be pretty large offering golf bettors even more ways to make money.

There is also the ability to engage in live golf betting. This is becoming more and more attractive as golf fans can now watch tournament action live and bet on outcomes.

Now that golf has become more popular over the last decade due to increased visibility on TV and streaming services, more people than ever are watching. With the increase in legal gambling in the U.S., more people can actually bet on the sport. The favorable odds across a wide variety of bets, it’s easy to see why golf betting has become the betting trend among sports bettors.
