Sunday Night Football: The 49ers host the Lions in a tough home test

Week 2 of Sunday Night Football features the Detroit Lions visiting the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions struggled in Week 1 against the lowly Rams. Quarterback Matthew Stafford turned the ball over on several occasions and the Lions needed a late drive to escape with a 27-23 win at home. The Lions need a much better performance against the 49ers if they want to be considered serious contenders in the NFC.

The 49ers made headlines last week as they beat the Packers 30-22 at Lambeau Field, proving that they're among the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

The oddsmakers at America's Bookie favor the 49ers by 7 points and the total is set at 46. The Packers are a different team than the Lions and even though the 49ers were impressive last week, they have to play the Lions differently.

The Lions have a tougher defensive front led by Ndamukong Suh, who will be able to match up against the 49ers running backs. Frank Gore rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown against the Packers but he will have a tougher time running against the Lions, which will put the pressure on Alex Smith to win the game through the air.

I like Matthew Stafford and star wide receiver Calvin Johnson to move the ball against the 49ers defense and a some key trends back the Lions in this game. The road team is 3-1-2 ATS in their last six meetings and the underdog is 3-1-2 ATS in the last six games.

These two teams have a history and they're eager to play one another after the recent meeting. Last year the 49ers beat the Lions 25-19 in Detroit and head coaches Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz had a very interesting handshake after the game. Both head coaches started a scrum with both sides yelling at each other. It ended peacefully but the video of the handshake went viral and it is one the big stories before this game.

These two teams will go to war in what promises to be one of the best Sunday Night games of the year. Look for a fight all the way to the end. This will be a very close game where points will be at a premium. The Lions +7 on the road and the under are the best plays here.
