with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over fellow American Jennifer Elie on the hardcourts
at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.
The second round also got underway, with third-seeded American Sloane Stephens
and Chinese Taipei’s Kai-Chen Chang securing spots in the quarterfinals.
Stephens battled past Portugal’s Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 and
Chang cruised to a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Sweden’s Johanna Larsson.
The 2012 D.C. champion will collect $37,000.
