Odds to Win the Barclays 2012 – McIlroy and Woods are Favorites

The 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week with The Barclays in Farmingdale, NY.  The oddsmakers have Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the favorites at +700.  I think we are seeing a promotion for golf this week more than anything.  The PGA seems to be really pushing a potential rivalry between the two golfers as they are paired together in the first 2 rounds.  It seems like the oddsmakers want to promote this notion.

McIlroy is the hot pick after winning the PGA Championship a couple of weeks ago and finishing in the top 10 in 4 of the last 6 tournaments he has played.  He is the #1 golfer in the world right now and a win here would go a long way to establishing his dominance in the sport.

Tiger has not had a bad year by any stretch.  He has been considered the favorite way more than he should, in my opinion.  While playing well and giving himself a chance in early rounds, he just hasn’t seemed to recapture the magic that he had when no one could touch him.  Another season passed without him getting a major win.  Winning the Cup would be one heck of a consolation prize though.  He could put 4 rounds together and win this event, but I don’t see the smart money backing him.

Justin Rose is the next golfer behind the favorites at +2000.  He is currently #8 in the world and has been consistently in the top 10 this year.  He could have a win in him but I am just not that excited about Rose as a pick.

Bubba Watson has been somewhat quiet since winning this year’s Master.  He is my sentimental favorite and it would be great to see him get another win.  Bubba has played some good individual rounds but hasn’t posed a threat in any event since Augusta.  Look for a great start to the playoffs and don’t be surprised if a dark horse takes this first event.

2012 The Barclays Odds to Win:

Rory McIlroy +700

Tiger Woods +700

Justin Rose +2000

Bubba Watson +2200

Luke Donald +2200

Adam Scott +2500

Dustin Johnson +2500

Keegan Bradley +2500

Lee Westwood +2500

Sergio Garcia +2500

Steve Stricker +2500

Phil Mickelson +2500
