Odds to Win the 2012 U.S. Open – Tiger is the Favorite
The PGA comes to us this week from the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California for the 2012 U.S. Open. This is the 5th time that the Olympic Club has hosted the Open.
The oddsmakers have Tiger as the favorite to win his first major since 2008. Woods won the Memorial Tournament 2 weeks back so he is striking the ball well and playing better golf. I still question his ability to focus and play 4 solid rounds. Want to make some money on golf this weekend? Don’t bet him to win it. Somehow he is sitting at #4 in the world, but has been only a shell of his former self.
Rory McIlroy is behind Tiger at +900. After struggling recently, Rory had a pretty decent outing last week, with only one day over par. He won the event last year and I see him having a good shot if he is close going into the weekend. I don’t know about winning but I predict a top 5 finish for him anyway.
We have Lee Westwood at +1000, Luke Donald +1200 and Phil Mickelson at +1500. All of these are safe choices for favorites. Westwood is 3rd in the world rankings but has never won a major. He has placed well in recent U.S. Opens. Donald is #1 in the world rankings but hasn’t won a major either. He hasn’t performed well in this tournament in the past. Old leftie is always a potential threat, but I don’t think this is his year to win it.
There are some very good players with long odds in this tourney. I hope the sports books don’t get burned too badly as I think one of these “long shots” could take this tournament. We have this year’s Masters’ champion Bubba Watson at +4000. Matt Kuchar at +2500 has played extremely well this year. He won the Players Championship and finished 3rd at the Masters. I could keep going as I see a lot of golfers that I like at +2500 and higher. Don’t be afraid to bet the long odds this week. I’m not sure who it will be but I’m predicting the winner will be one of the players at +2500 or more.
