Odds to Win the 2012 British Open – Tiger Woods Favored

The PGA heads to the UK this week for the 2012 British Open.  This is always a great tournament because you never know how bad the conditions might be.  This brings a much different aspect to golf than any other tournament on the tour.  Royal Lytham & St. Annes, where the event is played this year, is probably the nastiest course that the British Open uses.

Tiger Woods is listed as the favorite at +650 and I’m not really sure what my take is on this.  Tiger has won 3 tournaments this season and has shown flashes of his old self.  He hasn’t played terribly well in the weeks leading up to the tournament, so let’s see if taking last week off helps.  He has won this event 3 times and I will not count him out.  He really wants a major and if he starts strong he could make a run.

Lee Westwood is right behind Tiger at +1200 along with Luke Donald.  Westwood is #3 in the world and has won 2 of his last 7 tournaments this year.  He has never won this event and didn’t make last year’s cut.  Donald is at #1 and has won two tournaments in 2012, although he has not played well at all in his last 6 events.  He has never won a major and I personally don’t think he will start here.

At +1300 Rory McIlroy could be due for a win.  After the great season he had last year he has been a disappointment in 2012.  He has been somewhat erratic in his last 7 events, finishing in the top 10 in 3 and missing the cut in the other 4.  Let’s hope for some really nasty weather so we can see what these guys are made of.  This type of course should showcase some real shot makers.
