NCAA Basketball Who is Hot and Who is Not – 2/22

February 22, 2012 by agent

The regular season will end in a few days as teams continue to battle for a prime position in their respective conference standings. What they can do over the next few days will go a long way towards determining their postseason fate. Looking back at this season we have a clear picture of every team in Division I to clearly single-out out which programs are hot and which ones are not.

This list will identify the money makers that have been and continue to be white-hot against the spread. It will also point out the teams that have been a major drain on the bankroll by their inability to cover the spread. In the end we will have a weekly handicapping guide with a list of teams that you should bet on as well as a few to avoid altogether.

Who is Hot

Michigan State out of the Big Ten Conference has been on a roll as of late, winning and covering in their last five games and going 7-1 SU and ATS in their last eight games. Overall the Spartans are 22-5 SU and 17-7 ATS and they have been dominant against conference opponents, as evidenced by their 11-3 record SU and ATS. This team has also been tough to beat at home, where they're 16-0 straight up and 10-3 ATS.

The Mid-Major conferences usually dominate the standings when it comes to overall records against the spread and the Manhattan Jaspers out of the Metro Atlantic Conference are the perfect example this week. Manhattan is 19-10 SU and 19-8 ATS this season, including 11-5 SU and ATS against conference opponents. The Jaspers have been profitable on the road as well, they're just 9-7 straight up but they're 11-4 ATS.

The second Mid-Major team on our list is Saint Joseph's out of the Atlantic 10. The Hawks are 18-10 SU and 17-7 ATS this season, they're 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six games and their home record (10-2 SU and 7-2 ATS) is impressive. This team has been a money machine as a home favorite, going 6-1 SU and ATS and they're currently 7-4 ATS as an underdog.

A couple of teams from the major conferences that deserve an honorable mention are the No.3-ranked Missouri Tigers, out of the Big 12 and the Big Ten's No. 23-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The Tigers are 25-3 SU and 14-8-1 ATS and the Hoosiers are 20-7 SU and 13-8-1 ATS.

Who is Not

The Villanova Wildcats out of the Big East have struggled on the court and against the spread, they're 11-16 SU and 5-17-2 ATS. The Wildcats have been extremely costly lately, they have failed to cover in six of their last seven games (0-6-1 ATS) and the last time they covered the spread was back on January 18 as 2-point home favorites against Seton Hall. Villanova has also been terrible as an underdog, going 0-14 SU and 2-11-1 ATS.

The other team that has drained bankrolls on a regular basis is USC from the Pac-12, they're 6-21 SU and 9-17 ATS. USC has been equally bad at home and on the road, they're 4-11 SU at home and 1-9 SU on the road. The Trojans are a decent 5-5 ATS on the road but they're a costly 2-12 ATS at home. It doesn't seem like this team will get better anytime soon, they’re 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last five games and they're a disastrous 0-15 ATS as an underdog.

The teams that deserve a dishonorable mention this week are the Santa Clara Broncos out of the West Coast Conference at 8-19 SU and 8-16 ATS and the Big Ten's Illinois Fighting Illini, who are a respectable 16-12 SU but just 9-16-1 ATS.
