MLB Playoffs Games for 10/14

The ALCS will continue and the NLCS will begin today. Here's a preview of the games.

American League Championship Series Game 2

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

4:00 PM ET, October 14

Yankee Stadium

TBS

If the Yankees hope to capture their 28th world championship this postseason, they'll have to do it without their captain. The Yankees attempt to even the American League Championship Series at one win apiece when it hosts the Tigers on Sunday evening. Derek Jeter will be watching from the sidelines after fracturing his left ankle in the 12th inning of Detroit's 6-4 victory in the series opener on Saturday.

After fielding Jhonny Peralta's grounder, Jeter collapsed to the ground and remained there before being helped to the dugout, with his left foot never touching the ground. Jeter, who recorded his 200th career playoff hit in the second inning, has been one of the Yankees' best hitters this postseason, going 9-for-27 with a double, triple and two RBIs. He also leads the team with four runs scored.

The Yankees limited Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to one hit in four at-bats and held Prince Fielder to a pair of singles, including one that plated a run. But the Yankees couldn't contain Delmon Young, who delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning, belted his franchise playoff-record sixth home run in the eighth and snapped a 4-4 tie in the 12th with a run-scoring double.

Pitching Matchup:

Anibal Sanchez (0-1, 2.84 ERA) vs. Hiroki Kuroda (0-0, 2.16 ERA)

Sanchez pitched well in his first career playoff appearance on Tuesday but still was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings in Game 3 of the AL Division Series against the Athletics. He went just 4-6 in 12 starts with the Tigers after being acquired from Miami but was strong down the stretch, yielding two runs or less in six of his final eight outings. Sanchez was tagged for seven runs and seven hits over three innings of a loss against the Yankees on August 8.

Kuroda will be pitching on three days' rest for the first time in his major-league career. The 37-year-old settled for a no-decision in Game Three of the ALDS against the Orioles on Wednesday after allowing just two runs and five hits over 8 1/3 innings. Kuroda, who recorded 11 of his 16 regular-season victories this year at home, is 0-1 with a 3.72 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers.

National League Championship Series Game 1

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Francisco Giants

8:00 PM ET, October 14

AT&T Park

FOX

Fresh from a historic ninth-inning comeback, the Cardinals visit the Giants in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series in a battle between the two most recent World Series champions. Both teams enter the next round carrying plenty of momentum after advancing past the Division Series in dramatic fashion. The Giants lost two straight at home against the Reds before becoming the first NL team to ever come back from an 0-2 deficit in the Division Series to win, while the Cardinals trailed the Nationals 6-0 in Game 5 of its series before recording the largest comeback ever in a winner-take-all postseason game by scoring four runs in the ninth to win 9-7.

With Jaime Garcia (left shoulder) out for the rest of the postseason, the Cardinals will start Lance Lynn in Game 1 against the Giants. Chris Carpenter is expected to start Game 2, followed by Kyle Lohse in Game 3 and Adam Wainwright in Game 4. The Giants’ Tim Lincecum will likely return to the rotation after giving up one run over 6 1/3 innings in two relief appearances in the NLDS, with Barry Zito headed to the bullpen. The Giants are expected to start Ryan Vogelsong in Game 2, followed by Matt Cain in Game 3 and Lincecum in Game 4. San Francisco needs more production from Hunter Pence, Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro, who went a combined 10-for-60 (.167) in the NLDS, while the Cardinals hope Carlos Beltran's hot streak continues after he went 8-for-18 (.444) with two homers against the Nationals.

Pitching Matchup:

Madison Bumgarner (16-11, 3.37 ERA) vs. Lance Lynn (18-7, 3.78 ERA)

Madison Bumgarner looks to rebound from a rocky outing in Game 2 of the NLDS last Sunday, when he allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in the Giants’ 9-0 loss. Matt Holliday is 2-for-12 (.167) with three strikeouts against Bumgarner, who went 0-2 and allowed seven runs over 13 1/3 innings in two starts against the Cardinals this season. He’s 31-4 with a 2.56 ERA when the Giants score at least three runs.

Lance Lynn made three appearances in relief in the NLDS, giving up three runs over 3 1/3 innings. After struggling in August with a 6.66 ERA, Lynn went 5-2 with a 2.76 ERA in eight September appearances (four starts). He allowed four runs on eight hits over six frames in his one start against San Francisco this season on August 7 at Busch Stadium, with Buster Posey hitting a three-run homer in the first inning.
