Finland, Russia among winners at Worlds

Janne Pesonen scored the game’s lone goal at the 7:32 mark of the first
period, and Petri Vehanen made 26 saves for the host nation. Jan Laco stopped
21 shots in defeat.

The Finns blanked Belarus by the same score in their tournament opener two
days earlier.

In Stockholm, Russia posted a 4-2 win over Norway.

Pavel Datsyuk, Denis Denisov, Nikolai Kulyomin and Alexander Perezhogin scored
for the Russians, who got 19 saves from Semyon Varlamov.

Morten Ask and Marius Holtet both contributed power-play goals for Norway.
Lars Volden played well in the loss, turning aside 42 shots.

Switzerland and Latvia were also winners. Kevin Romy scored a tiebreaking goal
in the third period to send the Swiss to a 3-2 victory over Belarus, while
Latvia topped Germany by the same score.

In earlier action Sunday, Italy edged Denmark, 4-3, on Giulio Scandella’s
overtime goal, while France doubled up Kazakhstan, 6-3.
