English, Owen top 8 qualifiers for British Open
English fired a 10-under 60 in the first round and followed with a 63 in the
second round. His 60 set a new course record by two strokes. Fred Couples had
the old mark of 62 in 1995.
The 22-year-old English started on the back nine for his first round and
posted an eagle and two birdies to make the turn at four-under. He ran off six
consecutive birdies from the third before closing with a par to shoot 60.
In his afternoon round, English had three birdies on the front nine and four
more around the turn to win the qualifier by four strokes.
England’s Greg Owen carded a 66 in the first round, before firing a 61 in the
second round, taking second at minus-13. Stephen Ames, Andres Romero and
Justin Kicks shared third at 10-under-par 130.
Bob Estes, Daniel Chopra and James Driscoll grabbed the final three available
spots by ending at minus-nine. Russell Knox also finished at nine-under, but
lost out in a playoff.
Estes birdied the first playoff hole to earn his spot, while Chopra and
Driscoll parred the second extra hole to earn the final two.
The 141st Open Championship tees off July 19 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
