2012 WGC Accenture Match Play Preview

February 21, 2012 by golfer

After his win at last week’s event, Bill Haas will be looking to make a run at the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship.  This event features the top 64 golfers in the world (minus a couple of them for various reasons) in a unique format that pairs them against one another in what looks to be an exciting week.  The event will be played at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Course is Arizona.

Bobby Jones Bracket

1 Luke Donald vs. 16 Ernie Els

8 Jason Dufner vs. 9 Peter Hanson

4 K.J. Choi vs. 13 Kyle Stanley

5 Brandt Snedeker vs. 12 Retief Goosen

2 Adam Scott vs. 15 Robert Rock

7 Bo Van Pelt vs. 10 Mark Wilson

3 Dustin Johnson vs. 14 Jim Furyk

6 Thomas Bjorn vs. 11 Fancesco Molinari

Biggest upset: Kyle Stanley over K.J. Choi – Kyle Stanley has been on fire of late with a near-win at the Farmers Insurance Open followed up by a win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Choi has also been playing well of late, with two top-25 finishes in the year thus far, but I think Kyle’s win in Arizona should give him the edge in this one.

Winner: Luke Donald – Donald has played well at this event over recent years, and actually won it last year.  While he hasn’t been as dominant as he was for most of 2011, Donald should pull through and make it to the Final Four.

Ben Hogan Bracket

1 Martin Kaymer vs. 16 Greg Chalmers

8 David Toms vs. 9 Rickie Fowler

4 Matt Kuchar vs. 13 Jonathan Byrd

5 Bubba Watson vs. 12 Ben Crane

2 Steve Stricker vs. 15 Kevin Na

7 Louis Oosthuizen vs. 10 Aaron Baddeley

3 Graeme McDowell vs. 14 Y.E. Yang

6 Hunter Mahan vs. 11 Zach Johnson

Biggest Upset: Y.E. Yang over Graeme McDowell – Ever since his U.S. Open win in 2010 McDowell has not played all that well, with only 10 cuts made in 16 starts in 2011.  What will be key for Yang in this matchup is his putting, as he ranks near the top of the PGA Tour in many putting categories.

Winner: Bubba Watson – Watson is playing at a golf course that plays into his strengths (nearly 8,000 yard course, wide open fairways), and this should help him to get through this bracket.

Gary Player Bracket

1 Rory McIlroy vs. 16 George Coetzee

8 Kyung-tae Kim vs. 9 Anders Hansen

4 Sergio Garcia vs. 13 Miguel Angel Jimenez

5 Keegan Bradley vs. 12 Geoff Ogilvy

2 Jason Day vs. 15 R.C. Bello

7 Simon Dyson vs. 10 John Senden

3 Charl Schwartzel vs. 14 Gary Woodland

6 Ian Poulter vs. 11 Sang-moon Bae

Biggest Upset – Gary Woodland over Charl Schwartzel – Everything should go pretty straightforward in this bracket, but if I had to pick an upset it would be this one, as Woodland has great distance that should give him an advantage at the course that is being played at.

Winner – Rory McIlroy – McIlroy has been playing solidly all year long and should breeze through this bracket.

Sam Snead Bracket

1 Lee Westwood vs. 16 Nicolas Colsaerts

8 Robert Karlsson vs. 9 Frederick Jacobson

4 Nick Watney vs. 13 Darren Clarke

5 Tiger Woods vs. 12 Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

2 Webb Simpson vs. 15 Matteo Manassero

7 Alvaro Quiros vs. 10 Martin Laird

3 Bill Haas vs. 14 Ryo Ishikawa

6 Justin Rose vs. 11 Paul Lawrie

Biggest Upset: Martin Laird over Alvaro Quiros – Laird has played great so far this season, with four cuts made in five starts with two top-15 finishes.  I expect him to carry the momentum into this matchup against Quiros, who has yet to play on the PGA Tour this year and should be a little rusty.

Winner – Webb Simpson – In three events played thus far, Simpson has a T3, T38, and a T8 finish.  He is currently first on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation as well, and this should propel him into the Final Four.
